Q: Why must the backflow System be inspected & tested?

A: Because backflow assembly parts can break down and wear out, municipalities in the lower mainland have created by-laws to help ensure the safety of our drinking water.  By having the backflow tested annually, you will help to ensure the drinking water supplied to your home remains safe.

Terms:

Backflow happens when there is an undesirable reversal of flow in a potable (drinking) water distribution system; this occurs as a result of backsiphonage or backpressure.

Backpressure occurs due to a condition that creates pressure in the non-potable piping system greater than the pressure in the potable water system. Example: Backpressure can be caused by gravity, this due to elevation differences.

Backsiphonage is a form of backflow due to a negative or sub-atmospheric pressure within a potable water system.
